TRE (Tension and Trauma Release Exercises)
An effective stress reduction technique

What is TRE?

TRE (Tension and Trauma Release Exercise) is an effective self-care tool that can be adapted into any individuals’ lifestyle. By practicing a series of simple exercises we are able to activate an instinctive shake/vibration (neurogenic tremor) from the core of the body releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. This is taught in a very safe, controlled, sustained way. The end result of TRE encourages our body to shift towards a more calm and relaxed state of balance and flow.

Founded by Dr David Berceli PhD and originally named and developed for its ability to release severe traumas, it also has a significant impact on reducing general stress, anxiety, tension and pain, (especially in the low back and pelvis,) making them ideal not only for survivors of extreme trauma, but anyone with chronic stress and tension seeking greater wellbeing in their lives.

What are neurogenic tremors?

Most people have experienced involuntary shaking (neurogenic ‘knocking knees’ after a severe shock or fright, when extremely nervous (such as before public speaking) or even in moments of extreme excitement and joy.

The tremors are the central nervous system’s innate way of rapid muscle contraction and relaxation to calm the body down from an over excited adrenal state.

Neurogenic tremors are innate to all mammals and are easily observed for example, as a horse sends a tremor through its’ entire body after a fall. Other examples are gazelles shaking after escaping a lion attack, or ducks flapping their wings after a fight.

Who can benefit from TRE?

Since this shaking mechanism in the muscles is part of our natural behaviour as humans, everyone can benefit from TRE. When activating the neurogenic tremor even from the very first time participants have reported the body unravelling past injury from immobility to greater mobility, letting go of long term tense muscular patterns in the lower back, and a good night’s rest. Some feelings described post session- floaty, relaxed, grounded, and aware.

Is this a form of psychotherapy and counselling?

No, TRE is a neurophysiological process (addressing the nervous system) and does not involve a direct psychological intervention during the process.

For the vast majority of people, it does not require talking about or recalling past events and does not require the ongoing assistance of a therapist, meaning the process can be used on your own on an ongoing basis once learning has been consolidated.
